Niger Mine Collapse: 20 Dead, 14 Trapped | Daily Report Nigeria

A devastating mine collapse in the Galkago community, Shiroro district, Niger state, has claimed the lives of 20 individuals, with 14 others still trapped and awaiting rescue.

Commissioner of Police Niger State Command, Shawulu Danmamman, confirmed the fatalities during a visit to the mine site on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Monday, reportedly due to heavy rainfall that weakened the soil.

Initial reports from Niger state emergency service agency spokesman Hussaini Ibrahim indicated one fatality, several injuries, and 30 individuals, including the site manager, trapped in the collapsed mining pit.

Danmamman’s inspection revealed alarming negligence in safety measures and laborer welfare at the mine site.

Accompanied by state commissioners Bello Muhammad and Garba Auna, Danmamman revealed the absence of ambulances, medical kits, and emergency personnel on site.

He added that formal investigation into the accident has begun, and rescue efforts continue to save those trapped underground.
