Workers’ rights organizations, Cee Hope Nigeria and Roxa Luxemburg Foundation, have urged the government to include domestic workers in the new minimum wage proposal.

At a seminar on the rights of domestic workers in Abuja, founder Betty Abah revealed the hardships faced by domestic workers, stressing the need for equal rights and a living wage.

Abah said:

Domestic workers should have minimum wage, not meager wage and should be given the same rights like every other mainstream worker in Nigeria.”

Dr Claus-Dieter König, Regional Director of Roxa Luxemburg Stiftung West Africa, disclosed the importance of unionization for domestic workers, adding that they have the right to equal rights like workers worldwide.

The Organisation’s call comes as Nigerian workers demand a new minimum wage, with organized labor proposing N494,000 and the government offering N60,000.
