Former chairmen of 21 local government areas in Rivers State staged a protest on Monday, defying a police advisory against protests.

In Buguma, former Chairman Onengiyeofori George led the protest, calling for the police to maintain their occupation of the council headquarters. The protesters also presented a letter to the police, reiterating their demand.

In Abonnema, a similar protest was staged, with demonstrators backing the police closure of the council premises.

The protests come after the police took over the 23 LGA council secretariats in Rivers State last Tuesday, following a crisis that erupted over the expiration of the former LGA chairmen’s three-year tenure.

Three deaths were recorded in the wake of the crisis.
