Suicide Bombers Kill 30, Injure Over 100 in Multiple Attacks on Funeral, Wedding Ceremonies in Borno | Daily Report Nigeria

 

At least 30 people have been killed and over 100 injured in multiple suicide bomb attacks on funeral and wedding ceremonies in Gwoza, Borno State.

The attacks, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, were carried out by female suicide bombers and have raised fears of a resurgence of terrorist activities in the state.

According to eyewitnesses, the first attack occurred at a wedding reception, where a female suicide bomber detonated her explosives, killing and injuring several people. Shortly after, another bomber attacked a funeral ceremony, causing more casualties. A third explosion was reported at a hospital where the injured were being treated.

The Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr. Barkindo Saidu, confirmed the attacks and said that 18 deaths had been recorded, with 19 people seriously injured and 23 awaiting military escort for medical attention. He added that the degree of injuries ranged from abdominal raptures to limb fractures.

The Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta, also confirmed the attacks and said that over 100 people were injured, with many sustaining serious injuries. He added that the attacks had caused pandemonium in the town, with people scampering for safety.

The member representing Gwoza/Chibok/Damboa Federal Constituency, Ahmed Usman Jaha, sympathized with the families of the victims and prayed for the souls of the deceased. The state Commissioner of Police, Yusuf Lawal, confirmed the attack on the wedding ceremony and said that at least six people were killed, with 15 others evacuated to the hospital.
