A two-storey building at 12 Cameroun Street, off Ewenla, Mushin, Lagos, collapsed on Wednesday, but timely intervention by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) resulted in the rescue of seven persons.

According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the rescued individuals, consisting of three females and four males, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Oke-Osanyintolu stated, “Upon arrival at the scene, our rescue team discovered that the building was newly constructed. We have searched the rubble and confirmed that there are no victims underneath the collapsed building.”

This incident comes after a similar building collapse in Lagos in 2020, which resulted in fatalities. The state government had vowed to strengthen building regulations and enforcement to prevent such incidents.

LASEMA has cordoned off the area, and operations are ongoing to ensure the safety of the surrounding structures. The agency has also urged residents to report any signs of distress or potential building collapses to prevent future incidents.

Oke-Osanyintolu assured, “We will continue to monitor the situation and work with relevant stakeholders to ensure that buildings in Lagos are safe for occupants.”
