The Federal Government has announced plans to inaugurate the next phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, focusing on the Cross River to Akwa Ibom sections, in August.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ engagement in Uyo, emphasizing the importance of starting sections three and four promptly. The project will cover 27 km in Akwa Ibom and 38 km in Cross River for section three, and 80 km entirely in Akwa Ibom for section four.
President Bola Tinubu has directed that construction begin simultaneously in multiple subsections, with a redesigned rail track positioned alongside the highway.
According to Umahi, “We have awarded the contract and started Section 1, which starts from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos and terminates at Deep Sea Port at 47.47km on six lanes with a train track at the middle.” He added that sections three and four will bring numerous benefits to the region, including job opportunities and economic growth.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno have expressed their support and commitment to the project, urging local contractors to benefit from sub-contracts and jobs.

However, the Ministry of Works may terminate contracts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Lokoja-Benin road due to delays, with Umahi warning expatriate contractors of potential contract terminations if delays continue.
