Lionel Messi attempt, a failed panenka that hit the bar, was a shocking start to the shootout and he was consoled by Ecuadorian goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez. However, goalkeeper Emi Martinez saved twice to secure a 4-2 victory and Argentina’s place in the semi-finals.
They will now await the winner between Venezuela and Canada for their semi-final clash on Tuesday evening.
