Emiliano Martinez Credits Penalty Saves to Supporting Messi in Copa America Clash

Emiliano Martinez

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez credited his penalty-saving heroics to supporting Lionel Messi during their Copa America quarter-final against Ecuador. Martinez’s saves in the shootout secured Argentina’s spot in the semifinals after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

Lisandro Martinez gave La Albiceleste the lead in the 35th minute, but Ecuador equalized through Rodriguez in injury time. Argentina eventually prevailed 4-2 on penalties.

Reflecting on his crucial saves, Martinez told reporters, “I owed it to Leo Messi. He saved us in the World Cup, he was the best, and when things don’t go his way… I felt like I had to help him when he missed the penalty. He was coming off a strong injury in his adductor.”
