The management of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company has disconnected power supply to the Kaduna State Government House and other state government offices due to outstanding debts totaling N2.9 billion.

The disconnection comes after the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service sealed off the Kaduna Electric headquarters on Friday morning over unpaid taxes amounting to over N600 million.

According to the Executive Chairman of the Kaduna Internal Revenue Service, Jerry Adams, the agency obtained a court order to shut down the company’s operations and take over its property until all unpaid taxes are settled.

However, in a swift retaliatory move, Kaduna Electric cut off power supply to the Kaduna State Government House and other state government facilities, citing unpaid bills totaling N2.9 billion.

Also, the company’s spokesman, AbdulAzeez Abdullahi, explained that Kaduna Electric made repeated attempts to resolve the issue, including consultations with state government officials, before issuing a disconnection notice on July 21.

Abdullahi stressed that the decision to disconnect power supply was a last resort after all other avenues for resolving the payment issue had been exhausted.

Despite a recent payment of N256,920,963.88 made on May 9, 2024, for electricity consumed between September 2023 and December 2023, the Kaduna State Government’s debt remained substantial.
