The Lagos State chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) is urging the government to grant them a license to import maize directly, in a bid to alleviate the escalating cost of production.

According to Mojeed Iyiola, Chairman of the Lagos State PAN, the association is seeking to import maize to reduce reliance on middlemen and curb the soaring cost of poultry feed.

Iyiola explained that the current system, where a select few hold import licenses, has led to exploitation and high prices for poultry farmers.

He emphasized that direct importation by the association would enable them to provide affordable maize to their members, subsequently reducing production costs.

The PAN chairman also stressed the impact of rising feed costs on egg prices, stating that the constant increase in feed prices makes it impossible for egg prices to decrease.

He cited the example of grower feed, which has risen from N3,500 to almost N13,000 per 25kg bag since the beginning of the year.

Iyiola lamented over the growing production costs, saying that eggs are becoming less accessible to the poor, despite being an essential source of nutrition.

According to him, the association’s efforts to reduce costs would ultimately benefit consumers and ensure that eggs remain a staple in Nigerian diets.
