Chelsea could be facing a potential transfer ban as the Premier League continues its investigation into possible financial breaches during Roman Abramovich’s ownership. Premier League CEO Richard Masters recently provided an update on the situation.

Abramovich owned Chelsea from 2003 until 2022, when he was sanctioned by the UK government in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a result, he was disqualified as the club’s director. When the Todd Boehly-led consortium took over in May 2022, they reported discrepancies in the financial information from Abramovich’s tenure.

The Guardian and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism later uncovered leaked documents suggesting that Abramovich may have used offshore companies to make payments to agents and associates, with these transactions possibly benefiting Chelsea. These payments reportedly amounted to tens of millions of pounds, and if they were not properly disclosed, they could represent breaches of financial regulations.

In July 2023, UEFA fined Chelsea €10 million for “submitting incomplete financial information” between 2012 and 2019. The Premier League’s ongoing investigation is looking into potential connections between the offshore entities and those involved in transfers, which could result in further penalties, such as a fine, points deduction, or even a transfer ban for the club.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Richard Masters stated, “This is about historical issues, and it’s complicated because the club is now under different ownership. The investigation is reaching its conclusion, but until it does, we can’t say what the outcome will be.”
