Professor Oyewale Tomori, a renowned virologist and former Vice-Chancellor of Redeemer’s University Nigeria, has warned that Nigeria is at risk of importing Clade I Mpox, a notably virulent and severe form of the disease.

In an interview, Tomori emphasized the need for eternal vigilance and sustainable measures to prevent the importation of Clade I Mpox. He highlighted the importance of investing in preparedness, rebuilding epidemiology divisions in states and regions, and educating the public on the importance of cooperation.

Tomori expressed concerns about the possibility of Clade I Mpox being imported into Nigeria despite measures taken by the Federal Government to intensify monitoring and screening procedures at entry points. He stressed that individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with HIV, are more susceptible to severe infections.

The professor also emphasized the need for proper education and awareness-raising among the public, particularly at the grassroots level, to ensure effective surveillance and containment of the disease. He criticized the focus on vaccine production and procurement, highlighting the need for investment in disease surveillance, awareness, and communication.

Tomori’s warnings come as the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared a Mpox emergency, and the World Health Organisation has also raised concerns about the spread of the disease.
