Jamaican reggae legend Buju Banton recently revealed his Igbo heritage on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast with N.O.R.E and DJ EFN. Banton shared that his Maroon ancestors came from the Igbo tribe of Nigeria.
He expressed concern over the Jamaican government’s plans to introduce Chinese and other foreign interests into the Cockpit region, which he says threatens their Indigenous land and culture.
“Our Indigenous way of life and our land are at risk due to these developments,” Buju Banton said. “Maroons are the Indigenous warriors of Jamaica, and my lineage traces back to the Igbo people of Nigeria.”
