IGP Assigns 169 SIS Personnel to Combat Insecurity

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun has assigned the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) to go after criminals, particularly terrorists, bandits, and other violent groups threatening national peace and unity.

Egbetokun gave the directive on Monday during the graduation ceremony of 169 SIS personnel at the Police Mobile Force Training College in Nasarawa State.

The training was facilitated by the United States (US) Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL).

According to him, the training was necessary in order to enhance national security and protect citizens’ lives.

He explained that traditional policing methods have been effective, but the SIS was designed to bridge existing gaps and operate with expertise, precision, and efficiency.

Egbetokun stressed that the personnel were carefully selected and trained to counter severe threats decisively.

Furthermore, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Lanre Ogunlowo explained that the training lasted seven weeks and would add to the over 1,000 SIS members operating in eight states.

Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imam Suleiman appreciated the I-G’s efforts and stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration supported the creation of a special squad to combat insecurity.

US Ambassador Richards Mills, represented by Shaun Galvin, expressed America’s interest in assisting Nigeria in tackling insecurity and pledged continued support with expertise and logistics.

Also, Nasarawa State, Governor Abdullahi Sule commended the police for establishing the training college and its potential in addressing insecurity.
