The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized three petrol tankers that were being used to transport edible vegetable oil in Lagos.
NAFDAC’s concerns were centered around the potential health risks associated with chemical contamination from the tankers’ previous use for transporting petrol.
Upon receiving credible information, NAFDAC officials swiftly intervened, escorting the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota and handing over the crude soy oil to the Southwest Zonal Office for further regulatory action.
An attached video showed one of the seized tankers, with a NAFDAC official explaining that the same tankers used to load vegetable oil had previously been used to load petroleum products, posing a great public health risk.

It was revealed that the suspects involved were apprehended, and the trucks seized for further investigation.
NAFDAC disclosed that the tankers cannot be used for both vegetable oil and petroleum products, citing the dangers of mixing carcinogenic substances with food products.
In response to this incident, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Moji Adeyeye, has established a committee to develop guidelines and a code of ethics for the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils in Nigeria.
The agency urged the public to report any suspicious or unwholesome practices related to food and regulated products, ensuring the safety and well-being of consumers.
