President Bola Tinubu has approved a N10 billion grant for the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to drive the Digital Switch-Over (DSO) project, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s broadcasting industry.
Daily Report Nigeria reports that the project, launched in 2008, seeks to enhance TV programming quality and quantity, increase access to TV services, and free up spectrum for other uses.
The NBC Director-General, Charles Ebuebu, made the announcement on Thursday at a joint news conference with the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Dr Aminu Maida.
Ebuebu explained that the grant will be used to develop and manage channels, lease transponders, establish a robust satellite backbone, and conduct training sessions.

He stressed that digital broadcasting will bridge the digital divide, ensuring access to vital information, education, and entertainment for remote and unserved communities.
Furthermore, he believed that traditional platforms will adopt the new digital system, and the ecosystem will yield numerous dividends.
Maida added that convergence was the new way forward in digital operations, and the NCC is committed to being part of this journey.
The DG disclosed need to create content that is interactive and consumed on demand, which traditional broadcast does not allow or do optimally.
