Singer Omah Lay has expressed concerns that the afrobeats genre is under threat. He criticized the genre for becoming overly commercialized and diluted in an effort to appeal to international audiences.

In an interview on the Zach Sang Show, Omah Lay explained that the focus on profit is overshadowing genuine passion among artists. He noted that the influx of money into afrobeats is leading some artists to prioritize financial gain over their craft.

“There’s too much money in Afrobeats now, and many artists are just chasing the cash,” he said. “I think people are damaging the genre. It’s becoming too commercialized, and I’m worried that afrobeats isn’t in safe hands anymore.”

The genre has recently faced criticism from Jamaican reggae artist Buju Banton, who labeled it as lacking substance and predicted it would eventually fade.
