A crucial meeting between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is currently ongoing in Abuja, aimed at preventing an impending nationwide strike in public universities.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the meeting follows ASUU’s recent threat to down tools due to the government’s alleged failure to meet their demands.

Led by ASUU’s President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, the union’s representatives are engaged in discussions with the Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman, and top management staff of the Federal Ministry of Education at the Conference Hall of the Federal Ministry of Education.

Notably, former ASUU presidents, including immediate past president Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, are also part of the ASUU delegation, bringing their expertise and experience to the negotiating table.

The meeting was a follow-up to the Minister of Education’s announcement last Friday, during a briefing marking his one-year anniversary in office, where he hinted at a meeting with ASUU representatives on Monday.

However, the meeting was rescheduled, without specified reasons, and is now taking place today.
