This change is aimed at assessing the impact of financial autonomy on local governments and enabling effective oversight.
According to Matthew Kwarpo, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, “The amendment is in the best interest of Plateau State and not for any personal gain.” The revised tenure is intended as a trial phase, allowing the legislators to evaluate the effects of financial autonomy and make further amendments if necessary.
The amendment was made in response to the recent financial autonomy granted to local governments across Nigeria. The Plateau State House of Assembly assured the public that this change is in the best interest of the state.
