Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced that the new 6,000-capacity Edo Arena will be named after global afrobeats star, Rema. The governor made this announcement during the groundbreaking ceremony for the project in Benin City on Wednesday.

Rema, who was in Benin for his homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium, participated in the ceremony by laying the first block for the new arena.

“It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, @heisrema, join me for the groundbreaking ceremony of the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City,” Governor Obaseki said in a statement on X following the event.

Governor Obaseki also shared that the arena, once completed, will host a variety of events, including concerts, national conferences, symposiums, and other large gatherings. He emphasized that the venue will attract more visitors to the state, allowing them to experience Edo’s rich culture, which in turn will create employment opportunities for local youth.

Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, is a proud native of Benin City and a prominent ambassador for Edo State. He frequently celebrates the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire in his music and performances. His latest hit, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, pays homage to the city of Benin.
