Manchester United vs Liverpool are set to renew their historic rivalry in the Premier League Northwest Derby on Sunday evening at Old Trafford. United come into the game off the back of a disappointing start to the season, having lost 2-1 to Brighton and 1-0 to Fulham in their opening matches.

The Red Devils have bolstered their squad with new signings Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte, but they will be missing key players Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, who are sidelined with injuries, as confirmed by manager Erik ten Hag. They join Leny Yoro, Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, and Victor Lindelof on United’s injury list.

Last season, United faced Liverpool three times under their former manager Jurgen Klopp, drawing 0-0 at Anfield and 2-2 at Old Trafford in the Premier League, but securing a 4-3 victory in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

This season, Liverpool is under new management with Arne Slot at the helm following Klopp’s departure at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Slot has made an impressive start, winning his first two Premier League games against Ipswich Town and Brentford.

Slot will have a nearly full squad for the clash, with the exception of Curtis Jones, who is doubtful due to a groin injury, and new signing Federico Chiesa, who just joined the team on Thursday.

A victory at Old Trafford would mark a significant achievement for Slot, as none of Liverpool’s last nine managers have won their first league meeting against Manchester United since Bob Paisley’s 3-1 victory in November 1975.

George Kay remains the only Liverpool manager to win his first away league match against United, achieving a 5-2 victory at Old Trafford in November 1936.

As the Manchester United vs Liverpool match kicks off at 4 pm Nigerian time, all eyes will be on whether Slot can make his mark and lead Liverpool to a historic win at Old Trafford.
