The Yobe state government has announced a donation of N30 million to the families of victims of the recent insurgent attack in Mafa, Tarmuwa Local Government.

Daily Report Nigeria reports that the attack, which occurred on Sunday, resulted in the deaths of 34 residents and the destruction of shops and houses in the village.

State Deputy Governor Idi Gubana made the announcement during a visit to Babangida, the headquarters of Tarmuwa, for the funeral of the 34 slain persons. He sympatised with the Emir of Jajere, Mai Buba Mashio, and the people of the area over the “dastardly act”.

Gubana directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide shelter and food to the displaced persons who lost their belongings in the attack.

He stated that Governor Mai Mala Buni, who was “utterly devastated” by the killings, had visited the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, to discuss sustainable security measures in Mafa.

The deputy governor acknowledged the need for enough troops to be deployed in Mafa, located at the border of Borno and Yobe, to prevent future attacks on the trade hub.

Retired Brig Gen Dahiru Abdulsalam, Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Buni, clarified the number of casualties, stating that 34 people were found dead, while five others sustained injuries. He debunked claims of higher fatalities, attributing them to “rumours.”

Abdulsalam disclosed that the insurgents are targeting innocent civilians, who are “soft targets”, rather than confronting the military.
