The National Economic Council (NEC) has issued a warning to four states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), threatening consequences if they fail to submit their reports on state police by Monday.

This directive comes after a NEC meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday.

Acting Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, revealed that Kwara, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and the FCT have been given an ultimatum to submit their reports, saying that failure to comply will result in the council’s decisions being imposed upon them.

President Bola Tinubu had agreed with state governors on February 15, 2024 to establish state police as a solution to Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.

The governors had recommended state-level law enforcement as a crucial step in addressing the country’s security challenges.

Lawal stressed that the urgency of the matter stems from the worsening security situation across various regions, including the Northeast, Northcentral, Southwest, Southeast, and South-South.

He pointed out the need for decisive action, citing the rampant kidnapping in areas like Abraka, where concerted efforts are being made to tackle the menace.

Lawal said:

Unfortunately, four states did not submit their reports today. NEC has decided that these states must submit their reports by Monday, 9th September, or they will be bound by whatever decision the council takes on state police.”
