The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the recent fuel price increase by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), branding it ‘harsh’ and “unjustified.”

In a statement, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) lamented over the sudden price hike from N617 to N900, which he said would impose an ‘unbearable burden’ on ordinary Nigerians.

Osigwe argued that the abrupt increase would exacerbate the economic challenges faced by millions across the country, citing the ‘cascading effects’ on the cost of living, transportation, and essential goods and services.

“This additional financial strain is simply unsustainable. Many Nigerians are already grappling with inflation, unemployment, and other forms of hardship. If allowed to persist, this price hike will only deepen the poverty and hardship experienced by citizens.”

While acknowledging the need for economic reforms, the NBA stated that such decisions must prioritize the welfare of citizens.

The association called on the Federal Government to halt the policy’s implementation and engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to explore more sustainable alternatives.

It again urged the government to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable, and pursue policies that alleviate hardships faced by Nigerians.

Furthermore, the NBA reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and advocating for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians.

NBA said:

“We stand ready to engage constructively with the government to find a more equitable solution that ensures economic stability while safeguarding the interests of all Nigerians.”
