The Labour Party (LP) has called for a comprehensive investigation into allegations of financial misconduct involving its 2023 presidential campaign.

Julius Abure, the party’s current leader, has urged the National Security Adviser and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to look into claims that over ₦12 billion and $15 million in campaign donations were misappropriated.

At a press conference held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on September 12, LP National Publicity Secretary Abayomi Arabambi accused prominent party figures—including former presidential candidate Peter Obi, activist Aisha Yesufu, and Pastor Itua Ighodalo—of diverting substantial funds intended for the campaign.

Arabambi also alleged that Afenifere leaders were involved in the financial irregularities.

Arabambi stated, “Peter Obi allegedly engaged Aisha Yesufu, Pastor Ighodalo, and Afenifere to commit fraud and divert funds while presenting themselves as elder statesmen.” He further claimed that Pa Ayo Adebanjo, Akin Osuntokun, and Sola Ebiseni were implicated in financial infractions totaling over ₦600 million.

In response, Dr. Yunisa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obedient Movement, refuted the allegations, describing them as unfounded. “I was present when Aisha Yesufu provided the audited account of the presidential campaign fund, and no money is missing from the Labour Party’s accounts,” Tanko asserted.

Afenifere’s Deputy Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan, indicated that he was unfamiliar with the specifics of the allegations but suggested that a response from Afenifere might be forthcoming.
