Nigeria has recorded a total of 23,465 asylum seekers and refugees as of July 2024, with the majority being children.

According to data obtained from the United Nations Human Rights Council, Nigeria, the asylum seekers and refugees comprise 5,629 urban refugees and 17,836 asylum seekers.

The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons revealed that 15,908 asylum seekers are from Cameroun, 988 from Syria, 254 from the Central African Republic, and 292 from Sudan. Additionally, 81 are from the Democratic Republic of Congo, 36 from Chad, 46 from Palestine, and 103 from other nationalities.

The Commission further stated that 9,430 of the asylum seekers are children, while 5,689 and 2,706 are men and women, respectively. Since August 2022, over 22,000 persons have fled Cameroun to Nigeria, with the majority located in Adamawa State.

The report highlights that the ongoing L2 registration exercise in Adamawa State has registered 14,736 asylum seekers, mostly fleeing protracted violence in the Ambazonian War.

Rights groups estimate that over 700,000 Camerounians have been displaced since the war began in September 2017.

It was an influx of 5,629 urban refugees as of July 2024, primarily from Cameroon, Niger, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Syrian Arab Republic, Türkiye, Mali, Chad, and other nationalities.

The UNHCR notes that 2,047 are men, 1,537 are women, and 2,045 are children, with the majority being between 18 and 59 years old. The data reveals that June 2024 saw the highest registration of refugees and asylum seekers.
