SERAP Takes Tinubu to Court over Fuel Price Hike, Other | Daily Report Nigeria

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has launched a legal challenge against President Bola Tinubu, accusing him of failing to address the recent increase in petrol prices.

SERAP is also suing Tinubu for an alleged corruption within the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)

In a statement released on Sunday, SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, revealed that the lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1361/2024) was filed on Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The suit demands that the President directs the NNPCL to reverse the “unjust, illegal, unconstitutional, and unreasonable” petrol price hike from N845 to N600 per litre.

Furthermore, SERAP is urging the court to compel him to initiate a probe into the alleged corruption and mismanagement within the NNPCL, and to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted.

The lawsuit named the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, and the NNPCL as respondents.

SERAP argued that the petrol price increase is exacerbating poverty and hardship for vulnerable individuals, and that holding the NNPCL accountable for alleged corruption and mismanagement is essential for serving the public interest.

The lawsuit sought to protect the rights of Nigerians and ensure that the government takes concrete steps to address the country’s economic woes.
