The Federal Government has raised the alarm over an imminent flood disaster, warning Nigerians to clear their canals, drainages, and gutters to mitigate the impact.

This comes as the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency reported rising water levels in critical stations along the River Benue, which may lead to flooding.

The NIHSA, in a statement signed by its Head of Media and Publicity, Lauretta Samuel, warned that the water levels at the nation’s critical stations along the River Benue showed a steady increase towards flood levels.

“As of Saturday, the rise continues but at flood preparedness level,” the statement said.

The agency urged the 12 flood-prone states earlier warned by NIHSA to put measures in place to contain or allow conveyance. The states include Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Niger, Kebbi, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Anambra, and Bayelsa.

The Director-General of NIHSA, Clement Nze, said, “We are sounding this alarm because we want to avoid a repeat of the 2012 flood disaster that affected over seven million people. We urge Nigerians to take this warning seriously and clear their drains to avoid disaster.”

The Federal Government has also appealed to Nigerians to take responsibility for clearing their canals, drainages, and gutters to mitigate the impact of the floods. “We cannot do it alone; we need the cooperation of all Nigerians to avoid this disaster,” said the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu.
