Nigerian singer Charles Chibuezechukwu, popularly known as Crayon, has shared his experience with drug addiction, revealing a dark period in his life when he almost lost his battle to the habit. The ‘Ngozi’ hitmaker recounted a troubling episode that landed him in a psychiatric hospital.

During a recent interview with YouTuber Korty EO, Crayon opened up about how things spiraled out of control one day, culminating in an incident outside his record label’s office. Thankfully, fellow artist Rema came to his rescue at a critical moment.

Crayon recalled, “There was a day my manager saw me and was shocked by how I looked. He asked what was wrong, and I told him it was just weed. But soon, I started acting erratically. I walked barefoot down to Mavin studio. At that moment, I truly feel like I was God’s favorite because no one recorded me. If they had, it could have ruined my confidence, my career—everything.”

He continued, “When I reached Mavin studio’s gate, I just sat there. I was exhausted, mentally and physically. I took off my shirt, smashed my iPhone, and then calls started flooding in. Rem called, BabyFresy called—everyone was yelling, asking what was happening. I told them I was just tired. Then Rema showed up, ready to fight anyone who tried to harm me. I laid down on his lap, and he said something I’ll never forget: ‘Bro, once you get through this, you’ll come out stronger. This is the final battle you’re fighting.’ That stuck with me.”

Crayon admitted that he barely recognized anyone during the episode and even almost jumped out of a moving car in a moment of confusion. The intensity of his experience, he said, mirrored the struggles that late singer Mohbad also faced.

“I was taken to a psychiatric hospital in Lekki. It was a dark time, but after it all, I went to Don Jazzy’s house to recuperate. It was a long road back, but I’m grateful I made it through,” he concluded.
