Hundreds of women from Eke community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State staged a powerful protest on Wednesday, voicing their anguish over the alarming surge in kidnappings that has disrupted their lives and livelihoods.
The demonstration saw protesters block key routes, including the 9th Mile-Eke-Ezeagu and Eke-Akpakwume-Nze roads, as they demanded immediate government action to tackle the escalating insecurity in the area.
Chanting slogans, the women expressed their frustrations over the pervasive threats posed by kidnappers, which have compelled many to abandon their farms.
“Kidnappers have dealt with Eke people. They are kidnapping us one by one. Eke women no longer go to their farms. What crime have we committed?” one protester lamented, encapsulating the sentiment shared by many in the community.

The protesters also directed their anger at Nigerian soldiers, accusing them of worsening the situation. They recounted a troubling incident in which soldiers reportedly killed members of the community’s Neighbourhood Watch who had responded to a distress call regarding a kidnapping.
This incident has heightened fears among residents, who feel increasingly vulnerable.
Eke, a community historically known for its agricultural produce, is now gripped by fear as kidnappings become a near-daily occurrence. The once-thriving farming community, recognized for its cassava, yams, and cashew production, now faces significant economic strain as residents are afraid to venture into their farmlands.

“This protest is a cry for help. We need the government to step in before more lives are lost and our community is completely destroyed,” another protester asserted, echoing the desperation felt by many in Eke.
The Udi Local Government Area, home to 17 villages including Eke, Ngwo, and Obioma, boasts a natural aquifer supplying water to Enugu State and beyond. However, the current wave of violence and kidnappings threatens the stability and livelihood of its residents.
