JUST IN: Rivers Police Withdraws Security Personnel from Local Government Secretariats | Daily Report Nigeria

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Bala Mustapha, has ordered the immediate unsealing of the secretariats of the 23 local government areas (LGAs) in the state, following directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

This decision comes just a day after Governor Siminalayi Fubara inaugurated newly elected chairmen from the recent local government elections.

In a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, the action is framed as a move to uphold the neutrality of the police force and ensure the seamless operation of democratic institutions.

“This decision reaffirms the Nigeria Police Force’s stance on neutrality and its dedication to ensuring the uninterrupted operation of democratic institutions,” the statement read.

The police had previously sealed the local government secretariats in July due to a crisis stemming from a controversial tenure extension for former chairmen, with police personnel stationed to maintain order during that period.

The current order includes the withdrawal of all police personnel previously assigned to the secretariats, with redeployment only to occur in the event of a crisis or breakdown of law and order.

The Rivers State Police Command has assured residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and order, urging the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation develops.
