The Federal Government has announced significant increases in fees for national driver’s licenses and vehicle number plates, with new prices set to take effect on November 1, 2024.

The decision, communicated by the Joint Tax Board (JTB), aims to fund the implementation of improved security features for better identification of drivers and vehicles.

Under the revised pricing structure, a three-year motor vehicle driver’s license will now cost N15,000, while a five-year license will be priced at N21,000. Motorcycle and tricycle operators will also see fee hikes, with the three-year license now at N7,000 and the five-year option at N11,000.

The cost of vehicle number plates will also witness a substantial increase. Standard private and commercial vehicle number plates will now start at N30,000, while personalized fancy plates will be sold at N400,000. For motorcycles, the new plate price will be set at N12,000.

Olusegun Adesokan, Secretary of the JTB, highlighted the importance of public awareness regarding these changes.

In a recent circular, he stated, “The secretariat has requested that the FRSC notify the JTB of its public engagement and sensitization plans.

This is to enable relevant inputs where necessary, as we are confident that a very robust engagement arrangement will ensure the seamless implementation of the revised rates as approved by the board.”
