Ngeria has experienced a dramatic decrease in daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly referred to as petrol, following President Bola Tinubu’s assumption of office on May 29, 2023.

Data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reveals that petrol consumption dropped to 4.5 million litres per day by August 20, 2024, down from 60 million litres per day in May 2023—an astonishing 92% reduction.

The report highlights that only 16 out of Nigeria’s 36 states received petrol allocations from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in August, leading to fuel shortages in the remaining states.

Niger State received the highest allocation with 21 trucks, equating to 940,000 litres per day, while Lagos received 12 trucks, totaling 726,001 litres.

Kaduna also received 12 trucks, providing 454,001 litres. Other states, such as Oyo and Kano, received smaller allocations, exacerbating the fuel scarcity issue.
