Bobrisky Faces Fresh Criminal Charges After Panel Indicts Prison Officials

Bobrisky Faces Fresh Criminal Charges After Panel Indicts Prison Officials | Daily Report Nigeria

Controversial Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, is poised to confront new criminal charges following an investigative panel’s findings implicating four prison officials in alleged misconduct during his recent incarceration.

The panel, constituted by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, was tasked with examining claims of corruption linked to Bobrisky’s release from custody.

Bobrisky, who served a six-month sentence for abusing the naira, had previously alleged in a viral video that he bribed officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) with N15 million to drop pending money laundering charges and to allow him to serve his sentence in a private apartment rather than in prison.

The investigative panel, led by permanent secretary Magdalena Ajani, released its findings, which cleared Bobrisky of having slept outside the Kirikiri Custodial Centre during his sentence.

However, it recommended he face defamation and corruption charges for tarnishing the image of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The panel’s report indicated, “Bobrisky’s statements about bypassing the prison system are baseless and have damaged the institution’s reputation.

The Department of State Services (DSS) should investigate the bribery claims and, if verified, charge Bobrisky under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act.”

Among those indicted were three correctional officers, including former Controller of Corrections Ben Rabbi-Freeman, who was accused of facilitating improper transfer documentation related to Bobrisky’s custody.

The panel highlighted that Rabbi-Freeman’s actions involved backdating records, which contravenes established protocols.

The report called for disciplinary measures against these officials, underscoring the need for comprehensive audits of all inmates in custodial facilities and an immediate overhaul of welfare services to eliminate corruption.
