•Scheme to Empower Youths Begins in December 2024

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has unveiled plans to initiate a monthly stipend of N50,000 for 10,000 beneficiaries of its Youth Internship Scheme, starting December 2024.

This announcement was made by the Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, during a ceremony where he was honored as an Ambassador Extraordinaire by the University of Ibadan.

Ogbuku revealed that the Youth Internship Scheme, which commenced on August 5, 2024, drew applications from over three million young Nigerians. Selected interns will undergo training for a year in various organizations to develop essential skills.

“We are committed to enhancing opportunities for Niger Delta youths through initiatives like the Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE),” Ogbuku stated, highlighting the commission’s focus on aligning training with the youths’ interests.

During the event, Ogbuku called for increased research collaboration with universities to tackle pressing societal issues, noting that the NDDC is prepared to support research aimed at producing life-saving solutions, including vaccines.

“Together with universities, we can generate impactful research that addresses our community’s challenges,” he affirmed.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, praised Ogbuku for the transformative efforts under his leadership, emphasizing the importance of recognizing individuals who contribute significantly to society.

“The honor reflects Dr. Ogbuku’s impact on the lives of many,” Adebowale remarked during the celebration of the university’s 75th anniversary.

As part of its commitment to good governance, the NDDC recently completed a review of its corporate governance system with KPMG, aimed at enhancing internal processes.

“The completion of the Standard Operating Procedure is a vital step towards fostering a culture of strong ethics within the NDDC,” Ogbuku added, promising further project inaugurations by early December.
