Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has exercised his power of clemency by granting a pardon to 10 inmates serving sentences in correctional facilities across the state.

The pardon was announced by the Chairman of the Edo State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, Hon. Justice P.O. Isibor (Rtd), following a review of their cases.

In a statement issued on November 11, 2024, Isibor revealed that the Council had received a formal request from the Benin Correctional Service for clemency for those inmates who had less than one year left to serve in their sentences.

After carefully scrutinizing the applications, the Council recommended that the Governor grant them clemency.

“The Council convened a meeting where their applications were reviewed and, after careful consideration, made appropriate recommendations to His Excellency. We respectfully invite the Governor to consider and approve the Council’s recommendations,” said Justice Isibor.

The inmates pardoned by the Governor include Igwe Kelechukwu, Esazobor Ohioze, Gift Osaretun, Takyi Rockson, Dikuar Friday, Ossai Glory, Augustine Sunday, Daulagha Ebifagha Godluck, James Paul, and Anas Isah.

This decision comes after a letter from the Benin Correctional Service, dated November 5, 2024, formally requesting clemency for the inmates.

In a related development, the Governor’s administration has faced scrutiny over recent political tensions, including public disputes over the handling of state resources and governance matters.
