EFCC Places Obaseki on Watch List Over Suspicious Contracts

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on its watch list as part of an ongoing investigation into his administration’s contracts and financial transactions.

Obaseki, who completed his two-term tenure on November 12, had previously raised alarm that the EFCC was preparing to arrest him immediately after leaving office.

Despite this, the former governor expressed his willingness to cooperate with the anti-graft agency, stating that he had nothing to fear and would gladly submit to an investigation into his eight years in office.

However, the EFCC’s probe appears to have broadened, focusing on multiple contracts and financial dealings executed by the outgoing administration.

Sources within the commission revealed that although no direct link between Obaseki and the alleged financial impropriety has emerged, the investigation continues, with particular attention on transactions that may have raised red flags.

The timing of the investigation coincides with the inauguration of Obaseki’s successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, who swiftly formed a 14-member State Assets Verification Committee to scrutinize the former governor’s administration.

This investigation follows the EFCC’s arrest of five top Edo State officials on November 2, including the State Accountant General, Julius Anelu.

The arrests were made over allegations of massive withdrawals from the state’s treasury within a short span.

While Obaseki has maintained that he is unafraid of scrutiny, the controversy surrounding the contracts and the arrest of key officials continues to fuel political debates.
