The Federal Government has issued a warning about the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, urging health authorities to activate heightened alert systems as the strain spreads rapidly across the globe.

First identified in Australia, XEC has now been confirmed in 29 countries.

In a letter dated December 5, 2024, Dr. O.N. Anuma, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, instructed health officials to maintain high vigilance and immediately activate alert systems in hospitals.

XEC has shown a growth advantage over other circulating variants, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.

The ministry emphasized the importance of collaboration and timely sharing of data among health institutions to monitor and manage the variant effectively.

Healthcare providers were urged to maintain a high index of suspicion for patients presenting with COVID-like symptoms.

The XEC variant, which contains mutations potentially aiding its spread, has already been reported in over 600 cases globally. However, scientists believe that current vaccines should still help prevent severe cases.

The public is advised to remain cautious and follow preventive measures to reduce the risk of transmission.
