South Korea’s National Assembly has impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol over his failed martial law bid.
The unicameral assembly voted 204 to 85 to impeach Yoon, with three members abstaining and eight votes declared invalid.
The impeachment suspends Yoon’s powers until the Constitutional Court decides whether to formally remove him from office within 180 days. In the interim, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president.
“We can no longer endure Yoon’s madness,” said Hwang Jung-a, spokeswoman for the main opposition Democratic Party. “Impeachment is the only way to safeguard the Constitution, the rule of law, democracy and South Korea’s future.”

President Yoon has vowed to fight on, stating, “Although I am pausing for now, my journey for the future with the people over the past two and a half years shouldn’t stop. I will carry with me all the criticisms, encouragement and support I have received, and I will do my best for the nation until the end.”
