  • The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has added 19 new Nigerian words to its collection.

  • The new entries include words like Japa, Agbero, Eba, and Suya, which reflect Nigerian Pidgin English and street ways.

  • Dr. Kingsley Ugwuanyi, who consulted for OED, announced the additions.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) has expanded its collection to include 19 new Nigerian words, highlighting the country’s rich cultural diversity and everyday life.

The new entries, announced by Dr. Kingsley Ugwuanyi, who consulted for OED, reflect Nigerian Pidgin English and street mannerisms.

According to Ugwuanyi, the OED editors used corpora to determine words that are frequently and widely used across Nigeria.

“So, the criteria include frequency, widespread use, age (generally words that have been in use for zero to 10 years) and the social significance of the words,” he explained.
