Apple Faces £1.5bn Lawsuit in UK Over App Store Charges

  • Apple is facing a £1.5 billion lawsuit in the UK for allegedly overcharging users on the App Store.

  • The lawsuit claims that Apple’s 30% commission on app purchases is a “surcharge” that comes at the expense of consumers.

  • The case, which Apple has called “meritless,” is set to last seven weeks at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London.

Apple is facing a £1.5 billion lawsuit in the UK for allegedly overcharging users on the App Store.

The lawsuit, which was filed in May 2021, accuses Apple of breaching European and UK competition laws by excluding rival app stores from iOS devices.

According to Rachael Kent, a lecturer in digital economy at King’s College London and one of the plaintiffs, “The 30 per cent surcharge relates to most of the applications that you’re going to be using when you’re downloading and making in-app purchases on the App Store.” Kent cited dating platform Tinder as an example, but noted that the surcharge does not apply to applications offering physical products, such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

Apple has called the lawsuit “meritless,” stating that 85% of the applications on the App Store are free.

“We believe this lawsuit is meritless and welcome the opportunity to discuss with the court our unwavering commitment to consumers and the many benefits the App Store and Apple’s valuable technologies have delivered to the UK’s innovation economy,” Apple said in a statement..

Twitter Resolves Dispute with Apple

Twitter boss, Elon Musk has said that he and Apple CEO, Tim Cook have resolved their dispute.

Reports had stated that the technology manufacturing company was considering removing the microblogging platform from its App Store.
