Blue Origin, the space company founded by billionaire Jeff Bezos, achieved a major milestone on Thursday as its New Glenn rocket successfully reached orbit on its maiden flight.
The rocket launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 2:03 a.m. (0703 GMT), carrying a Defense Department-funded prototype spaceship called Blue Ring.

“LIFTOFF! New Glenn is beginning its first-ever ascent towards the stars,” Blue Origin said on social media platform X. “New Glenn has passed the Karman line, the internationally recognised boundary of space!” the firm posted just a few minutes later.
Blue Origin executive Ariane Cornell confirmed that the mission had achieved its “main objective” of reaching orbit.

The successful launch marks a significant milestone for Blue Origin as it competes with Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the commercial space industry.
Musk commended Bezos on the achievement, offering congratulations “on reaching orbit on the first attempt” in a post on his X platform.
Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp also expressed optimism, posting on X: “We did it! Orbital. Great night for Team Blue. On to spring and trying again on the landing.”
