Fire Guts INEC Office In Sokoto, Destroys 558 Ballot Boxes

  • The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State has been damaged by fire.

  • The fire, which started in the early hours of Tuesday, February 11, 2025, destroyed several items, including ballot boxes and voting enclosures.

  • INEC is investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have been triggered by a sudden surge in public power supply.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that its office in Gwadabawa Local Government Area of Sokoto State has been damaged by fire.

According to Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, the fire started in the early hours of Tuesday, February 11, 2025.

“The entire building was damaged. Items destroyed include furniture and fixtures as well as movable electoral facilities, among them 558 ballot boxes, 186 voting enclosures (cubicles), 186 election bags and various Registration Area Centre (RAC) materials such as 12 large water tanks (1,000 litres), 400 sleeping mats and 300 plastic buckets,” Olumekun said.

The commission is investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have been triggered by a sudden surge in public power supply.

“Preliminary report from our state office indicates that there was a sudden surge from the public power supply before the incident,” Olumekun explained.

Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were recorded, and INEC is working to find an alternative facility to continue its operations.

Fire Outbreak Kills 17 Almajiri Students In Zamfara Islamiya School

A devastating fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in the Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has claimed the lives of at least 17 Almajiri students.

The fire, which started on Tuesday night, also injured 16 other students, according to a resident of the area, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura.
