  • General Ibrahim Babangida has admitted to annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election, won by the late Chief Moshood Abiola.

  • Babangida made the admission in his autobiography, “A Journey in Service; An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida,” unveiled on Thursday.

  • The admission has reignited debate over the legacy of the June 12 election.

Thirty-two years after annulling the presidential election, former Nigerian military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida has publicly acknowledged his mistake.

In his autobiography, “A Journey in Service; An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida,” unveiled on Thursday, Babangida conceded that Chief Moshood Abiola had fulfilled all constitutional requirements to assume the presidency.

Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed Babangida’s book, revealed that the former military leader acknowledged Abiola’s victory after careful review.

However, Babangida stopped short of explaining why Abiola’s mandate was not restored, leaving many questions unanswered.

The June 12, 1993, election was widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest. Still, Babangida’s annulment led to widespread protests and a deep political crisis. Babangida described the cancellation as the greatest crisis his administration faced.

The admission has rekindled discussions around one of Nigeria’s most contentious elections, symbolizing the nation’s struggle for democracy.

While many Nigerians, particularly from southern regions, have long recognized Abiola as the rightful winner, the annulment’s full consequences remain a source of national anguish.

Presidency: Obasanjo, Babangida, Abdulsalam Working For Peter Obi – Sowore

The Presidential Candidate of the African Action Party, AAC, Omoyele Sowore has claimed that former Heads of State, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalam Abubakar are working for the Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Sowore, who claimed that the former Nigerian leaders are all ‘working for’ the presidential ambition of the former Anambra state governor, urged Nigerians not to vote for Obi because criminals were backing him.
