  • Goodluck Jonathan has stated that the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) faces challenges in accurately counting votes due to the presence of “ghost voters” in Nigeria’s electoral process.

  • Jonathan emphasized the need for credible people to oversee the electoral process.

  • He also stressed the importance of improving the voter registration system and electoral processes to ensure democracy functions effectively.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has attributed the challenges faced by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in accurately counting votes to the presence of “ghost voters” in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Jonathan stated this while speaking as a guest at the YIAGA Africa Reflection Conference on Democratic Elections in West Africa.

According to Jonathan, “In Nigeria, you can’t get an accurate count of votes because I believe that we have too many ghost voters.”

He emphasized the need for credible people to oversee the electoral process, saying, “We must have credible people. From what (ex-INEC Chairman, Attahiru) Jega said, political leaders who are so domineering will pressurise you to do what is wrong; you should be able to resign and leave.”

Jonathan also kicked against the regionalisation of the nation’s electoral process, describing it as a major hindrance to Nigeria’s desire to elect capable leaders.

He stressed the importance of improving the voter registration system and electoral processes to ensure democracy functions effectively.

Jonathan cited successful elections in Ghana, Liberia, and Senegal as examples, noting that these countries demonstrated public enthusiasm for democratic participation and consolidation despite limited technology deployment.
