The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has explained that the 50% tariff increase for telecom companies is necessary to guarantee meaningful access to telecoms services for Nigerians.

Tijani stated that the decision to increase telecoms tariff was difficult, but the government had to balance the need to allow businesses to be sustainable with ensuring citizens’ access to telecommunication services.

According to Tijani, “We have to ensure that when they invest, we can keep them afloat. This is a sector that employs close to half a million people in this country, including the value chain.”

He noted that the Federal Government engaged KPMG to conduct a study to determine the optimal tariff allowance, which led to the 50% increase.
