Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers Local Government Elections

The Supreme Court has declared the local government elections conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on October 5, 2024, as invalid.

In a judgment delivered by Justice Jamilu Tukur, the apex court ruled that the electoral process failed to comply with legal requirements, thereby rendering the elections null and void.

The court emphasized that due process must be strictly followed in the conduct of local government elections to ensure fairness, transparency, and legitimacy.

With this ruling, the tenure of the elected local government chairmen and councilors has effectively been annulled, creating uncertainty about the leadership of the 23 local government areas in Rivers State.

Supreme Court Bars CBN, Others from Releasing Funds to Rivers Govt

The Supreme Court has issued an order preventing the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other relevant agencies from disbursing funds to the Rivers State government.
