FG Breaks Promise As NYSC Members Receive N33,000 Instead of N77,000

• Despite promises of an increase, the federal government has paid National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members a monthly allowance of N33,000 for February, instead of the assured N77,000.

• Many corps members have taken to social media to express their frustration and disappointment over the government’s failure to fulfill its promise.

• They lamented that the N33,000 stipend is insufficient to cover their living expenses.

The federal government has failed to fulfill its promise to increase the monthly allowance of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000.

Despite assurances from the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, corps members received only N33,000 for February, sparking widespread disappointment and frustration.

The development comes after President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a new national minimum wage of N70,000 in 2023.

However, the administration has yet to extend this adjustment to NYSC members, leaving them financially strained amid rising living costs.

Many corps members took to social media to express their displeasure over the government’s failure to fulfill its promise.

“They’ve given us 33k again! I’m tired of this selfish government!” one corps member lamented. Another wrote, “But why does the Nigerian government find it easy to inflict hardship on citizens? NYSC is causing us excruciating pains. I spend over 100k every month — 33k can’t even cover data bills or transportation. Is 77k really too much to pay?” .

The NYSC Director-General had assured corps members in Katsina State that they would start receiving N77,000 from February. However, this pledge has not materialized, with corps members across the country still receiving the old stipend.

As of press time, neither the NYSC management nor the federal government has provided any official explanation for the delay in implementing the promised allowance increase.

NYSC Member Regains Freedom After Family Pays N1.1m Ransom

A National Youth Service Corps member, Rofiat Lawal, who was kidnapped along the Benin-Ore Expressway, has regained her freedom after her family paid a ransom of N1.1 million.

Lawal was kidnapped while traveling from Benin, Edo State to Ibadan, Oyo State to resume at her place of primary assignment.
