The Oscar 2025 Academy Awards held in Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles on March 2, came with surprising twists that have sparked online debates over the choice of winners. The 97th Oscar ceremony had some nominees heartbroken, while others smiled home with awards.
The indie comic film, Anora, took the biggest prize of the award with its five category wins: best actress award, best picture award, best director award, best editing award and best original screenplay award.
Anora movie lead actress, Mikey Madison beat major top contenders like Cynthia Eviro of Wicked, and Demi Moore of The Substance to clinch home the “Best Actress ” award of the academy.

Same line, Anora movie director, Sean Baker took the lead among other nominees and won the “Best Director” award of the year.
The period drama, The Brutalist had Adrien Brody, clinch the “Best Actor” award for his incredible lead role the movie. The youngest Oscar winner Brody, in his acceptance speech said he is representing ‘the lingering traumas and the repercussions of war and systemic oppression of antisemitism and racism…” He stated that hate should not be left unchecked , a subtle shade which had earned him massive criticism.
Zoe Saldana won the “Best Supporting Actress” award for her incredible acting in Emilia Perez. Her acceptance speech an emotional rendition especially when she noted she is a “proud child of immigrant parents” amidst the Trump immigration crackdown law on illegal immigrants. Saldana is the first American of Dominican origin to win an Academy Award.

The “Best Supporting Actor” award was won by Keiran Culkin for his amazing acting in the movie, A Real Pain. Keiran hilariously pointed out during his acceptance speech that his wife promised him four kids if he won an Oscar.
However, the Academy Award did not end without some surprising snubs to some nominees who went home empty-handed. Notable among the snubs were Cynthia Eviro who had anticipated a win to make her an EGOT ( Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winner. Despite Eviro’s spectacular acting in the movie, Wicked, she was snubbed, including Ariane Grande who was nominated for the best-supporting category.
Demi Moore wasn’t left out of Oscar’s snub as her epic performance in The Substance went unrecognized by the academy. However, she masked her loss and graciously expressed support for Madison’s win.

According to Business Insider Africa, the movie, Emilia Perez received the most nominations with thirteen (13) categories, but in the winning list, it saw a far lesser figure as Anora tops the game.
