  • Full-blown drama as Umuada insists on N1M from in-laws.

  • Disagreement as In-laws angrily left the marriage ground.

  • Ceremony scatters over a disagreement as both parties haggle over settlement.

An epic drama happened during a traditional marriage rite of a bride in Mbaise, Imo State.  The ‘Umuada’ group demanded the sum of N1m as a settlement for their traditional right which the in-laws found ridiculous. The rife disagreement caused chaos and voices of both families coming into a marital union were heard in angry outbursts.

In a viral video making rounds on social media, the marital decorations have been duly set up and many guests have been seated.

During the payment of bride price and negotiations of other marital requirements, Umuada insisted on a one million naira settlement before the marriage could proceed.

This didn’t go down very well with the groom’s family as they found the price exorbitant. From the voices heard in the video, many questioned if the family wanted to sell their daughter.

Umuada is made up of married women who constitute part of the traditional Igbo leadership system. They are usually seen as representatives of the women of the land and can interfere in marital issues, especially during marriage ceremonies and the death of a married son of the soil.

The Umuada can crack difficult cases that the elders would easily give up on. For example, in the case of a deceased married man, Umuada would question the wife of the deceased and fetch the truth from her mouth using their traditional manipulative skills. Thus, Umuada  are usually feared in Igbo land, especially when one gets on their bad side. But they can be a great support system when one is on their good side.
